During a recent meeting with House Republicans at the Capitol, former President Donald Trump took aim at Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), labeling him a “grandstander” over concerns related to government spending. Trump expressed frustration with Massie’s continued opposition to legislation aimed at advancing the GOP’s fiscal agenda, claiming Massie seeks attention and lacks a fundamental understanding of government operations.
The former president suggested Massie should be removed from office, pointing out his consistent refusal to engage constructively in policy discussions. Despite Trump’s remarks, Massie stood firm, stating that the meeting did not alter his stance on the legislation, which he believes would significantly contribute to the national deficit.
Trump’s Capitol visit was intended to solidify Republican support for what he has dubbed the “big, beautiful bill.” However, internal divisions within the GOP — particularly from fiscal conservatives like Massie and moderates advocating for higher SALT deductions — have stalled progress.
This isn’t the first time Trump has publicly rebuked Massie. Earlier this year, he pledged to support efforts to replace him after the congressman voted against a temporary funding measure supported by Republican leadership.
