“Motorheads” Review: A Promising YA Drama That Stalls in the Final Stretch

Set in a small Rust Belt town, “Motorheads” is a young adult drama series centered on street racing, family legacy, and the difficult choices that define adolescence. The story follows teenage twins Caitlyn and Zac, who relocate from New York to their mother’s hometown of Ironwood—a fading community with a deep automotive culture and even deeper secrets. While Caitlyn embraces the change, Zac struggles to find his place until he meets Alicia, a local girl in a strained relationship with the town’s entitled rich kid, Harris.

As they settle in, the twins form bonds with Marcel, a quirky neighbor seeking connection, and Curtis, the rebellious mechanic with a complicated past. When Caitlyn discovers their father’s abandoned muscle car, she persuades her uncle Logan and Curtis to help restore it. Meanwhile, tension builds as Zac and Harris prepare for a high-stakes race, pulling others—including Harris’ volatile older brother—into the mix.

With its high-octane visuals and authentic depiction of underground racing culture, “Motorheads” offers plenty for car enthusiasts. Iconic vehicles like a classic Charger, a Mustang, and a Porsche steal the spotlight. However, the show’s obsession with cars overshadows its character development. Many side characters are underused or underwritten, resulting in a bloated cast that detracts from the main plotline.

Despite a strong core cast and intriguing themes, the 10-episode first season often feels disjointed. Multiple subplots and a crowded ensemble dilute the impact of key storylines. Emotional arcs are left unresolved, and several characters feel more like placeholders than real people. The result is a series that starts with promise but spins its wheels without reaching a satisfying destination.
