Minnesota Governor Urges Preparedness for Potential Federal Pardon of Former Officer in High-Profile Case

Minnesota’s governor has emphasized the need for proactive measures in the event of a federal pardon for the ex-police officer convicted in the high-profile killing of George Floyd. While acknowledging the scenario as unlikely, Governor Tim Walz stated that state officials and local communities should remain prepared.

Walz clarified that even if a presidential pardon were granted, it would not override state convictions, meaning the former officer would still serve a 22.5-year sentence in a Minnesota prison. The governor noted there is no indication such a pardon is under consideration but stressed vigilance given the unpredictability of the prior administration. He added that discussions with community leaders have focused on maintaining public trust and ensuring accountability, regardless of federal decisions.
