Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk has become the second overseas cricketer to opt out of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), following England’s Jamie Overton of Chennai Super Kings. The IPL is set to resume on May 17, but Delhi Capitals (DC) will be without Fraser-McGurk, who was signed for INR 9 crore during the mega auction.
DC has named Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman as Fraser-McGurk’s replacement for the rest of the tournament. Mustafizur, who previously played for DC in the 2022 and 2023 editions, has been signed for INR 6 crore. However, according to the updated IPL rules, temporary replacements like Mustafizur won’t be eligible for retention in the next season.
There’s a hiccup, though—Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has clarified that it hasn’t yet received a request for Mustafizur’s No Objection Certificate (NOC). He is currently with the national team for back-to-back T20I series in Dubai and Pakistan, which overlap with the IPL calendar.
Fraser-McGurk had a promising end to IPL 2024 but struggled this season, managing just 55 runs across six games before being dropped. Despite his dip in form, his absence could affect DC’s playoff ambitions, especially as the team awaits clarity on other key overseas players.
Among them are Australia’s Mitchell Starc and South Africa’s Faf du Plessis and Tristan Stubbs. Stubbs is part of the South African squad for the ICC World Test Championship Final starting June 11, and Cricket South Africa has stated that players involved in the WTC must follow their original NOCs, valid only until May 25.
