Over the years, several performers have taken on the iconic role of Ben Grimm — better known as The Thing — the tough, rock-covered hero of Marvel’s legendary superhero team. Unlike his teammates with powers of invisibility, elasticity, and fire, Ben’s abilities are all about strength and resilience, brought on by a cosmic event that forever changed him.
In previous film adaptations, Michael Chiklis and Jamie Bell have brought the character to life. Now, a new version of the rocky hero is set to debut in the upcoming reboot, Fantastic Four: First Steps, directed by Matt Shakman. This time, the role is headlined by Ebon Moss-Bachrach — known for roles in The Bear, Andor, and Girls — who lends his physical performance and voice to the character.
Because The Thing is a full CG character, the process involved multiple layers: performance capture by Moss-Bachrach, a practical suit used for lighting and movement reference, and even a real rock — affectionately named “Jennifer” — used as a reference model in various lighting conditions for realistic texture and detail.
Despite the technical collaboration, Moss-Bachrach’s emotional performance is at the heart of it all. He was the first actor cast for the new team and brings a personal connection to the character, rooted in a shared New York heritage with legendary comic artist Jack Kirby. “Ben is a real Lower East Side soul,” Moss-Bachrach shared, “and that history makes it even more meaningful for me.”
