Trump’s Frustration with Putin Grows Amid Escalating Conflict in Ukraine

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, long known for his cordial relationship with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, has voiced growing frustration over Russia’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine. In response to a weekend barrage of Russian drone and missile attacks, Trump remarked, “Something has changed with Putin,” suggesting a shift in his perception of the Kremlin leader.

Despite repeated warnings and calls for de-escalation from the United States, Putin appears unwavering in his approach to the conflict. The airstrikes on Ukraine have become a grim routine, and efforts to negotiate peace remain stalled.

Trump, who once claimed he could broker a resolution swiftly, now seems increasingly disillusioned. French President Emmanuel Macron noted this apparent change, referencing Trump’s recent description of Putin as “absolutely CRAZY.” Macron believes the statement reflects a realization that the Russian leader has been dishonest about his intentions regarding the war.

This marks the sixth time in Trump’s current political run that he has publicly criticized Putin. In March, Trump expressed deep anger over Putin’s refusal to support a temporary ceasefire. A month later, after a deadly missile attack on Kyiv, he issued a strong plea for Putin to halt the aggression.

Trump’s remarks have included personal disappointment and vague threats of economic consequences—such as imposing tariffs on Russian oil or additional sanctions. When recently asked about expanding sanctions, Trump confirmed he was open to the idea. However, no concrete action has yet been taken by the administration.

Meanwhile, bipartisan efforts in the U.S. Senate are pushing a new bill aimed at cutting off Russia’s war funding. With support from over 80 senators, the legislation proposes not only tougher sanctions on Russia but also steep tariffs—up to 500%—on countries continuing to import Russian energy. This would notably affect nations like China, India, and EU members.

It remains uncertain whether Trump will support this bill or any variation of it. Historically, he has been hesitant to adopt aggressive measures against Moscow.

As the war drags on, Trump’s ability to influence either side appears increasingly limited. While his rhetoric against Putin grows harsher, it’s possible that, faced with ongoing setbacks, Trump might opt to disengage from the issue entirely.
