A Democratic state legislator from New Jersey is facing assault allegations after a tense encounter with law enforcement during a visit to a federal immigration detention site. The incident occurred earlier this month when officials, including a local mayor, arrived to inspect the facility amid ongoing debates over immigration enforcement policies. Federal authorities claimed the group unlawfully entered the property, while the lawmakers asserted their right to conduct oversight.

The U.S. Attorney’s office, led by a Trump-appointed official, announced the charges while simultaneously dropping a trespassing case against the mayor involved. Video footage from the event showed heated exchanges between officials, law enforcement, and activists, though no injuries were reported. The detention center, recently reopened under federal directives, has become a flashpoint in the national immigration debate.

The accused legislator denied the charges, calling them politically motivated, and prominent Democratic leaders criticized the legal action as unfounded. Meanwhile, the mayor stated that facility staff permitted his entry and exit, contradicting claims of forced entry. The U.S. Attorney offered to arrange a guided tour of the site for the mayor, signaling a potential de-escalation.
